What is TeamPuls® based on?

TeamPuls® is based on a questionnaire which items which have to be rated by every team member. Responses are anchored on a 4-point scale ranging from "stronly disagree" to "strongly agree". The statements refer to the effectiveness and performance of a team and are assigned to the 7 success factors of teamwork:

Goal - & performance Orientation (GP) refers to the way in which objectives are set, the review of the achievement of objectives and their impact on performance.
Commitment & Accountability (CA)    describes the emotional commitment of the team members to the team, the level of mutual support and initiative.
Team Communication (TC) refers to the mutual flow of information, the efficiency of meetings and the constructive handling of conflicts.
Team Leadership (TL) includes target-oriented influence, interpersonal interaction and external representation of interests.
Team Organization (TO) includes self-organization regarding the planning and distribution of tasks as well as the way of decision-making.
Task-oriented Learning Activities (WL) describes the quality of the learning objectives, the planning of the learning activities and the error culture in the team.
Organizational Integration (OI) includes the quality of the external interfaces, the resources provided and the autonomy granted.

TeamPuls® can be adapted:

Standard version: includes 56 statements, whereof each success factor contains 8 items.

Additional team type-related modules: 10 team type-related statements, which cover the specific requirements of different team types and are assigned to the 7 success factors.

The following modules are currently available:

 Team Type Item (example)
Management The strategical alignment of the (unit of the) organization is defined jointly.
Production The workmanship is effective and efficient and follows defined standards.
Social Service The course of action of each team member is characterized by a strong customer-service orientation.
Technical Service Grievances and complaints by customers are resolved courteously and quickly.
Sales and Consulting The composition of the team is fully suitable to the team´s taks with respect to the occupational qualifications represented in the team.

Organizational adaption: The questionnaire can be adapted to the specific circumstances of the respective organization, e.g:

  • Adaptation of the wording to the internal organizational language
  • Addition of organization-related examples to the items
  • Remove/add questions

The questionnaire is available online, which allows an economic surveying process.

The questionnaire is available in the following languages:

  • German
  • English

The questionnaire can be used in all areas with teamwork, e.g:

  • in research and development
  • in production teams / semi-autonomous groups
  • in service teams of the service sector
  • in management and leadership teams
  • in sales and consulting teams

In case of newly formed teams the members should work together for approx. 1-3 months* - depending on the intensity of the cooperation - before participating.

*in case of daily cooperation in the production area approx. 1 month; in case of sales teams with a high level of individual work approx. 3 months

A team consists, if possible, of a relatively small number of people

  • whose abilities complement each other
  • who are commited to a common goal
  • who pursue a common approach to work and
  • who hold each other accountable.

The minimum size should be approx. 4-5 persons, otherwise a qualitative analysis (e.g. inventory in a meeting) is more useful than a written survey. The maximum size for real teams is usually 10-12 persons, whereby individual exceptions due to the procedures/technological processes are possible.
